Monroe Middle School Standard Paper Format
All students should follow these directions for all school assignments that are completed using a word processor. These guidelines are based on the 6th edition (2003) of the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers by Joseph Gibaldi. Follow these instructions carefully to produce a legible and complete paper.
Formatting a Paper
1. Choose one of the following fonts: Times New Roman, Ariel, Comic Sans, Tahoma, Garamond.
2. Use a type size of 12 point for the entire paper, including the title.
3. Set one-inch margins all around the text of your paper—left side, right side, top, and bottom. To accomplish this, go to File, Page Setup. Click on the Margins tab and adjust the margins to 1” if necessary.
4. Use double spacing throughout the document, including the heading, quotations, and list of works cited. Go to Format, Paragraph. In the middle of the dialogue box, change Line spacing from “Single” to “Double.”
Heading and Title
1. Unless your teacher gives a special instruction, your paper does not need a title page.
2. The heading will be typed one inch from the top of the first page only and flush with the left-hand margin. Type your first and last name on the first line. On the second line, type your teacher’s last name, spelled correctly. On the next line, spell out the word Period with a capital P and include the correct class period number. (For a language arts block, put the number of the first period that the class meets.) The fourth line of the heading is the date. The day of the month comes first, followed by the name of the month, spelled out, and then the year. Do not separate with commas. Example: 12 September 2006
Use the date on which you will hand in the paper, not the date on which you begin it.
3. After the fourth line of the heading, enter once. Change the toolbar button from left-aligned to center-aligned. (Do not use the spacebar or TAB key to align the title in the center.) Type the title of your paper in the same font and size as the heading and body. The title should not be underlined, bold-faced, or written in all capital letters. Capitalize the first letter of the first word and of every other word except articles (a, an, the), conjunctions, and prepositions.
Paragraph Format
1. When you finish typing the title, enter once. Change back to left margin alignment. Indent (TAB) to begin the first sentence of your first paragraph.
2. At the end of each paragraph, enter once and use the TAB key to indent to begin a new paragraph.
3. After each punctuation mark, including each period, space once.
4. Underline the titles of books, plays, newspapers, magazines, films, television programs, and compact discs. The underlining is one continuous line beneath the entire title. Capitalize the first word and all principal words except articles, conjunctions, and prepositions.
5. Do not put the words “The End” at the bottom of your paper.
